I intend to buy a health insurance for my family. I have a brief idea of all the benefits included in the health insurance. I am keen to understand what is meant by first year and second year exclusion?

Hello Vishal Saxena

I appreciate the fact that you are moving in the right direction of buying a health insurance policy to cover your family.

Along with the numerous benefits associated with buying a health insurance policy .The health insurance providers in India generally have a waiting period  for medical expenses on certain diseases as specified in the policy such as cataract, hernia, piles,  sinusitis, etc. The listed ailments are not covered for a given number of years. The insured will have to make the payments if he contracts any of these illnesses within this period.

@ Medimanage

I understand that there are a few ailments that have a waiting for 1-2 years, but after completing the tenure are they fully covered?

We would like to inform that after the completing of the tenure the health insurance provider covers these ailments completely. However it is important to renew the policy on a timely basis to enjoy the continued benefits

Hey,

I agree with Vishal Saxena, I have also heard about the various benefits of buying a medical insurance policy but have little knowledge about all that would not be included. I wanted to know if I buy a policy today from when can I avail its benefits.?

@ Kunal

You will only get coverage for hospitalization due to accidents for the first 30 days from the date of commencement of the policy.

All other ailments that need hospitalization are excluded for the first 30 days. Pre existing diseases are covered only after 2- 4 years of continuous cover , depending only our policy terms.

If I disclose my pre existing ailment will it be permanently excluded by the health insurance provider or will there be a waiting period for the ailment

 @ naman

It is important to disclose all pre existing ailments however mild or chronic, to the health insurance before buying the policy to avoid later hassles.

Exclusions depend upon the type of ailment. The health insurance provider has the final discretion of excluding the ailment completely or covering the same after awaiting period.

Thanks Somya for your advice.  But is it possible that if one health insurance provider offers a permanent exclusion to an ailment, then the other providers will also completely exclude the ailment. What do you suggest should we check with other providers for relief?

It is suggested that you buy your health insurance policy from a health insurance broker who is authorized to sell products from different companies and can compare their pros and cons.  After understanding your personal requirements, he would be the best person to suggest the best policy that suits your requirements.
