For me, it's hard to imagine my day without my morning cup of Coffee/Tea. Tea/Coffee plays a very important part in my routine; This is the case with almost all of us. For many having a hot cup of Tea/coffee means the right way to start the day. According to stats, 80% of the world's population depends on morning tea or coffee.
Both tea/coffee contain caffeine which has various effects on us. Not only tea/coffee many other drinks have caffeine in them like coke, sodas, various energy drinks and soft drinks even sweets like chocolate, mints, some energy bars have a lot of caffeine in them. But what exactly is this substance lets understand?
WHAT IS CAFFEINE?
Caffeine is a natural stimulant that is present in tea, coffee, and cacao plants. When consumed it stimulates the central nervous system and brain. It also helps in staying awake and active. It was discovered many centuries back and since then it has been an important part of our diets. Now let's study its effects on us.
EFFECTS OF CAFFEINE ON VARIOUS HORMONES
CORTISOL: Cortisol is a hormone which is released when we are stressed. If it is on the higher side it has many effects on the body like it inhibits brain function, slows metabolism, increases blood pressure etc. When we feel panic or anxious it is basically a bump in the levels of cortisol. It is believed that caffeine triggers cortisol release in the body. When we have caffeine in excess, cortisol is released and hence we feel activated and charged.
ADENOSINE: It's a chemical that is present in the CNS and it controls our sleeping and waking patterns. Adenosine signals our body and tells it when it is time to rest. When caffeine enters our body it interacts with the adenosine receptor sites in the brain and hence the brain activity increases and makes you feel more energetic, that's why it interferes with sleep!
ADRENALINE: This is a stress-triggered hormone that is released to heighten the energy levels. Intake of caffeine increases the release of this hormone and this gives you a quick surge of energy hence making you feel physically charged even when there is no actual need for this!
DOPAMINE: It stimulates the pleasure centre of the brain. Caffeine increases the levels of dopamine, in turn, making us feel happy and relaxed. It is this reason that many of us get addicted to caffeine. Basically, caffeine manipulates the production of dopamine, in turn, making us feel good. So now you know who is attracting you to that coffee mug!
So you see that caffeine has many effects on us, while the limited intake is good, it is for us to keep a tab and choose wisely, stick a schedule and not drink tea or coffee at night which can definitely interfere with our sleep pattern!
And now that you know that simple cup of coffee can have so many effects on your body, we hope that you will take care of your health!
