Imagine this: You walk into the office on time daily, work well giving nobody a chance to complain, but somewhere within you are not happy with the way things are going on at the workplace. Your social interactions with team members are conflicting and not –that –great, you find it hard to gel as a team member, and you feel your opinions are no longer taken seriously. You are low on confidence and feel like running away from everything…..may be you need a few tips that could help renew that lost energy, send that low self esteem skyrocketing and turn things around in your favour . Read on to find out….
Attitude matters: Whichever position of the hierarchy you are in your office right now, and the position you wish to see yourself in later, depends a lot on the attitude you bring to work. Be optimistic and be willing to learn. Nobody knows everything, and nobody is a born perfectionist. Your attitude must be to provide solutions, not to simply pointing faults.
Take the initiative: Very often we have ideas to contribute, opinions to make, suggestions to give, but we do not want to be the first to do it. We do not want to take the initiative for fear of being labeled, ‘smart-ass’. We wait for someone else to start and take the flak, but in this wait, we lose the opportunity to make the difference! Start, stand and speak! The maximum that could happen would be that your suggestion won’t be accepted. But then at least you tried and you are seen! Take the initiative to give a presentation to take a new project to enter a new dept etc
Be a good listener: Very often in order to make your point, you need to first understand what the opposite person is saying. Listen carefully, to understand better, thereby building up a good reply. All the more, when you want attention to what you have to say, you must pay attention to what others say as well.
Appreciate: Everyone wants to be recognized and appreciated. Even though it involves small things that you come across everyday with your colleagues, appreciation will make you feel good and wanted. Complimenting your colleague that you recognize his/her efforts, would make your working relationship great. Make sure you get some for yourself as well.
Be creative: It’s not in you to be stagnant, to be there where you are! Bring in more ideas, add value to what you are doing and you would see the sea of change your work goes through. And more so, when you contribute to your company and do it as a team, it adds meaning and a sense of higher purpose to your life.
Own up your mistakes: Nothing would earn you more respect and consideration than when you take the blame for something you did wrong than to find ways of justifying it and defending yourself.
Take responsibility: If you make a mistake own up to it totally and completely, because you are responsible for your actions. This will earn you respect and trust.
Be accountable: When you make a commitment, abide by it. Not remaining faithful to your word erodes the trust necessary for a working relationship. Once you break your word, it would be difficult for you to build that lost trust again.
Be Positive and Enthusiastic: Finally, think positive, be happy, smile and don’t take yourself too seriously. As a famous personality once remarked, ‘A mature person is the one who has the ability to laugh at himself’. Try to add that zest and spontaneity to the workday!
Remember, your workplace is where you spend most of the time of your life. If you do not enjoy your work, you are dong injustice to yourself!
