Rohit, is a marketing manager and loves his work but hates to go to his office as he does not share a good rapport with his immediate boss. He opines that “However good I work my customer is happy but my boss fails to appreciate my work. He feels that his boss is his greatest enemy and he looks down upon everything that he does”. Such feelings spread negative vibes in the office.
Neeraj, is an account assistant and has a good standing with his boss but hates it when he does not get all the attention. These are few instances which are seen in most offices.
Having a good relationship with your superiors can create a good atmosphere and have an immediate effect on the growth of the company and its employees.
To strengthen your relationship with your superiors :
- It is very important to develop a positive attitude with your boss which can be created only on trust. You can develop trust by keeping up your commitment and completing the given work on time. Communication is the key to build up good relationship. It is also important to keep him posted about all the interactions and the status of the project. You should inform him about all the office on goings even if there has been a goof up or delay by any of your subordinates. Hiding facts would only add to stress and affect your relationship.
Example: Nitin is a soft ware developer. He has prepared a software for his client which is in its concluding stages. His superiors are very happy that the project will be dispatched to the client on time. While working on the project Nitin accidently deletes some important files. He feels that if he informs his superiors it might reflect wrongly on him. However, when the project is on the trial run his superior realize that there is something amiss. Such incidents should be avoided as it places the superiors and the reputation of the entire company at stake which in turn worsens the relationship.
- It is important to understand your boss as a person. Understand the goal of the organization and work in accordance to match the success of your department and company.
- Acknowledge your boss to be your mentor and try to learn from his experience. It is important that you accept the fact that your boss has his designation because of his experience and effective work contributions. Listen more and speak less to take full advantage of his experience.
- It is crucial that you value your superior’s time. Prepare a list of question that you need to ask regarding your project and clear your doubts at one time this will offer him time to get his work done.
- Always offer suggestions or ideas if you have any. Be positive even if your suggestions are turned down.
This presentation looks good but I feel if it would better if it was designed in the following manner.
- Always ask for feedback and accept it willingly. Accept your mistakes and try to amend them. Do not always look at praises. Accept criticism whole heartedly and take it in a positive stride. There are times when you may have disagreements with your superiors but do not over react and never hold grudges.
Just wished to know if the presentation was as per your expectation.
Always remember every coin has two sides similarly every boss has good points as well as negative points. Look at his positive aspects. When you carry a negative vibe you tend to focus on his failures.
It is important to work in rhythm within the organization so that you enjoy your work and are away from the work place stress.
