Sex is one of the most intimate and personal ways of expressing love for your partner. However with the rise in Sexually transmitted diseases, teen pregnancies, casual sex etc, sex has become an area of concern for all parties involved directly and indirectly!
Is there really a need to have guidelines as to why ‘not’ to have sex?
Surely, there is a glaring need to have a concrete set of guidelines as to when not to have sex in India. Plus with a change in lifestyles and mindsets of Indians in recent times towards sex, which had so far been considered a taboo is now being acknowledged openly. And just as every coin has two sides to it, this new found attitude towards sex has resulted in unsafe sex, casual sex, early sex etc. which as mentioned above have given rise to STD’s and many more such problems.
But with the parents worrying about their children becoming sexually active early on, and young adults worrying about accidental pregnancies or contracting the dreaded STD’s, while the government frets over the high numbers of citizens getting afflicted with STD’s every day, there is no one party that is giving out concrete reasons as to why one shouldn’t be having sex!
4 Reasons why you shouldn’t be having sex?
While one can be provided with plenty of reasons as to why he/she should have sex, as it is proven to be healthy and have plenty of benefits, there is also a flip side to it which includes 4 very important reasons why one should not have sex!
Following is a list of 4 such reasons why one should refrain
- Early sex might lead to teenage pregnancy:
With sex being accepted more openly today in our culture and society, young adults and teenagers are becoming increasingly sexually active quite early on in their lives. With low levels of emotional maturity and a vague understanding of sex and its later implications, teenagers are indulging in sexual activities leading to a rise in teenage pregnancies.
While there is nothing wrong with pregnancies arousing from sexual intercourse, the problem here is the age of the parents. With teenage pregnancies there is not only a risk to the young mother’s life but also to the babies as proven by the high risk of nutritional and obstetric problems that accompany a number of adolescent pregnancies.
Though abstinence is the likely solution to this problem, it also depends on the teenager’s support system and awareness levels.
You may be 12, 21 or 55 years old peer pressure is constantly present in every individual’s life. Man is a social animal and hence has a need to belong to a social group; it is this need that makes an individual conform to peer pressure. Most often individuals belonging or identifying with high risk behavior peers, indulge in the same for e.g. if most of your friends smoke, you are bound to end up as a smoker too, due to peer pressure.
The same applies to sex, and with the introduction of western concepts such as one night stands, casual sex, sex without strings, peer pressure is resulting in more and more people feeling pressurized to have sex early on or have one night stands. This, in turn is putting them at high risk of contracting STD’s, unwanted pregnancies.
- Risk of contracting STD’s:
India had no confirmed cases of AIDS or HIV till 1986, but according to expert sources we are expected to have around 20-25 million HIV positive Indians by the current year!
That statistic above is reason enough to not have sex without protection, awareness and ample education in regards to sex. However the best way to avoid STD’s is by means of abstinence from sex before marriage, other ways could be avoiding sex with multiple partners, using protection and refraining from indulging in risky sexual behavior.
Lack of awareness as a reason may not seem as relevant as the others, it is a major contender for inclusion in the reasons to not have sex. Any individual without any basic knowledge of sex or without any sexual education is bound to indulge in unsafe sex practices and hence put himself and others at risk.
Lack of awareness about available means of protection, basic sex guidelines as the importance and safety of being loyal to one partner as opposed to multiple partners and other such important things leads to a rise in the risk factors attached to sex.
Whiles these 4 are concrete reaons enough to not have sex, they can be easily overcome by proper awareness, getting oneself educated about safe sex practices, using adequate protection and a whole lot understanding when it comes to having sex!
