Late 2006 saw the whole of India subjected to a strange heat wave, courtesy Bipasha Basu’s village belle act in the famous “Bidi Jaliale...’ song from the movie Omkara. This was followed by her looking ravishing as a police officer out to catch a crook in Dhoom 2, never had India seen such good looking Police officers! But Bipasha is no stranger to such adulations, infact ever since ‘Jism’ her first hit at the Box office, the dusky beauty has been drawing in crowds.
So what’s it like to be Bipasha Basu?
One of Bollywood’s current leading heroines and Diva supreme, Bipasha Basu admits to having been laidback regarding her fitness during her modeling days! In a candid confession, she states that “Actually, I got into fitness because of the film No Entry. Since I play a dancer, I knew that I’d have to bare my midriff. All my fears about showing my belly came up. So, I started working out”
No Entry was a superhit and so was Bipasha Basu! Buoyed by the positive reaction to her new svelte look, her gym routine soon became a priority than just a choice. Blessed with the absence of any vices such as smoking or drinking, Bipasha has a strict fitness routine planned for every day that she never skips. In fact such is her dedication to staying fit that she is known to bring along her personal trainer, every time she is on an outdoor shoot!
Bipasha’s Fitness Regime
Having one of the most desirable bodies in the business takes a lot of hard work, and no one knows it better than Bipasha herself! While ‘Jism’ propelled her amongst the A-List of actresses in Bollywood, it did nothing for her Fitness.
She was still accused by critics of being overweight, while No Entry may have been the introduction to the world of Fitness, it was a scathing comment by one such critic on her weight that resulted in Bipasha Basu taking up exercise and a healthy diet with a vengeance. Explaining her strong desire to get back in shape, Bipasha says, "The whole thing started some years back when I saw a tabloid headline saying how fat I was. That was a wakeup call and since then I have tried to eat right and keep a check on my weight”
The secret behind Bipasha’s amazing figure!
The only non-sporting person to endorse Reebok, Bipasha Basu has come a long way from her earlier days in the fitness industry, when she was criticized for being overweight. With a combination of Weight and Cardio Training along with a strict diet plan, she has worked hard to achieve a well-toned and sculpted figure.
Mixing it up: Doing the same set of exercises day in and day out can be boring! So Bipasha mixes up her workout regime as follows,
- Day 1 — upper body workout
- Day 2 — abdomen workout
- Day 3 — legs and lower body workout
- Day 4 — gluteus maximus (butt) workout
- Day 5 — upper body workout
- Day 6 — abdomen and gluteus maximus workouts
Bipasha devotes a total of 45 minutes to 1 hour, every day for her workout. With a rigorous workout session like this, one is bound to notice immediate changes in their body and push further. However therein lies the fear of injury, something that Bipasha has experienced firsthand! She damaged her left knee owing to excessive running on the treadmill.
Now-a-days, a fit Bipasha takes care not only to exercise regularly but also to maintain her fitness. She spaces out her cardio workouts within a 50 minute session as follows,
- 20 minutes – Treadmill
- 10 minutes – Elliptical Trainer
- 20 minutes – Rowing Machine
Being a huge fan of ‘Suryanamaskar’, the dusky beauty is known to do 108 of them every single morning! Explaining her dedication and passion towards fitness, Bipasha states that, “Fitness is my passion and with constant training I have realized that one can really achieve focus in life, which in turn helps you achieve your goals faster.”
Trainer Speak: Paul Britto, Trainer Gold Gym, who has been training the dusky beauty for the last three years, says that, “Bipasha is very dedicated to her workouts and knows how to maintain her fitness”. Raving over Bipasha’s newly toned body, Britto who has also trained John Abraham adds that, “The last three years have seen a tremendous change in her body, her muscle mass has increased and she is looking toned too!”
I don’t eat Rice – Bipasha Basu (Psst..She’s a Bengali, they Love Rice!)
We all know that the secret to a healthy body is exercise and a well-balanced diet. Being a morning person, Bipasha starts her day with drinking a glass of hot water with lime; this is followed by a handful of badams that have been soaked overnight and a cup of tea.
Big Breakfasts: Bipasha usually works out on an empty stomach, as she believes that it helps burn more calories. However she also believes in not starving oneself, as within an hour of stopping her morning workout, she consumes a big breakfast consisting of six egg whites, brown toast and fruits. Justifying her preference for a big breakfast, Bipasha says, “The breakfast can be changed every day, depending on your taste and preferences. But a breakfast has to be a little bit heavy on the stomach because that jump starts your metabolism for the day”
Lunch: Speaking about her lunch, Bipasha says she like to keep it simple and not too heavy like normal Indian Lunches. Most often she opts for a simple lunch of dal, a vegetable preparation (sabzi) and chapatis. She even makes sure that all her food is cooked in Olive oil. On her insistence of using only olive oil in her food, she states that, “Everything is made in olive oil. I don’t like too much oil in my food. But on occasions I don’t mind it like in Pooris and Paratha’s, since I eat them occasionally”
No rice: What surprises us the most is that despite being a Bengali, Bipasha opts to steer clear of her rice! “Well, I’m a Bengali and I can’t find taste in food without rice, but when I started working on No Entry, I decided to stop eating Rice”, states Bipasha as to why she stopped eating rice. Since then she has opted for Wheat, as it is contains more Proteins, minerals and fibre as compared to rice, “I think wheat is great. You mix wheat with bajra, so you can have bajra ki roti or soya rotis”, states Bipasha explaining how she incorporates wheat in her diet.
Dessert: For all those of us who are looking to lose weight, yet are cursed with the sweet tooth, Bipasha shines like a beacon of hope with her simple philosophy of never starving your body! “I’m a true Bengali; I love mithai, specially the Indian mithai. And if you have a balanced diet most of the time, you can reward yourself and satisfy your cravings once in a while.”
While many of her counterparts have opted for the size zero ‘emaciated’ look, Bipasha has instead gone ahead and popularized curves!” My mantra is to love yourself and work out for your heart and soul. It has done wonders for me”, she states on the eve of the launch of her Fitness DVD titled ‘Fit and Fabulous’, an apt title for someone like Bipasha Basu, don’t you think?
