This of course doesn’t mean that you imagine yourself as Kareena and eat as Babita. Positive thinking can be a good starting point for any new workout or a diet. Losing weight is as much as a mental battle as a physical one. There is a whole mindset to conquer and old habits to break. There are temptations at every stage with our own negativity to deal with. We all know that we tend to lose the battle of weight loss at the start with thoughts like “I can’t stick to this diet”, “Losing weight is too tough for me” and “it’s the Genes, not me”.
So instead of laying down the arms we must concentrate on fighting these thoughts. Conquer your thoughts than let them conquer you.
Even now a part of you might feel, does this work? Here is something for the left brained ones: In a study by Harvard researcher, Psychologists studied 84 hotel cleaners, whose job involved physical activity. Half the group lost an average 1 kg and lowered their blood pressure somewhere in the region of 10 percent, while the other half had no noticeable changes.
The only difference between the two groups was that the successful group had been coached to believe that the jobs they were doing burned calories, made them healthier and helped them lose weight.
If Positive thoughts alone can do so much, Positive thoughts along with healthy diet and exercise can work miracles!
Here’s how to do it:
- Imagine yourself at your ideal weight. See yourself slim and healthy. Don’t say that you want to lose weight, believe that you have.
- Be in Control. Be responsible for your body and this will set you free. Don’t blame the genes, the addictions, the emotional problems or childhood habits. You are not victim of any if these; you are what you choose to be.
- Don’t compare with others. Everyone is different. What works for your friend won’t work for you. See what does and make your own Plan for Diet and work out.
- When you do make your own plan, do not ban anything, if you do then it will only increase the chances of you getting the urge of eating it more. Eat your favorite foods but in small portions.
- Tell your friends and family about your goal of losing weight, their support will boost your self confidence.
- Remove all the temptations out of your way, refill your fridge with healthy options,
- Forgive and Forget. When you find yourself gorging something you shouldn’t or breaking your regime, don’t focus on the failure. You will feel like quitting it, resist the temptation and continue with the same vigor.
- Be happy. Weight gain is related to all negative emotions like Stress, Anxiety, Depression and low self esteem. Being cheerful and happy reduces the chances for you to binge.
- Repeat these affirmations; positive thoughts. Stick these on your office desk or your Fridge so that you see it every day.

Adnan Sami, the well known singer was suffering from severe obesity from a long time. At one time, he couldn’t walk more than 5 steps at a time and slept on sofas as he couldn’t lie down.
Since then, he has lost more than 130 kgs. This change only came through after his doctor gave him months to live.
He attributes his weight issues to his reaction to all emotions- he ate when happy, when sad and when stressed.
After going through it, he says Weight loss is also more mental than physical. He says our mind can go without food but it’s our mind which feels we need to eat more.
After losing weight he feels he is more positive and more in control of his life.
