You know, there is immense power in “One”. Yes, single, it may be, but it marks the beginning towards a journey. It has the power to lead and touches our lives in incredible ways, daily. 'One Minute”, 'One Person', 'One life', 'One world' and Just 'One' way of being healthy!
There are umpteen numbers of articles, opinions, videos et al that suggest the many ways of becoming healthy and fit including numerous diets, workouts, weight management, therapies and treatments. But all these notwithstanding, there is just "One" and only "One" way, you can actually turn your life around for the better, embrace health and vitality and never complain of boredom.
The Mantra: Embrace the Power of One and you will never complain of ill-health and never visit a doctor!
1. One hour of exercise daily:
Think about this! Whoever says you need to devote two hours or more than that to keep yourself physically fit and active. Use the power of one and exercise just one hour everyday, and this does not mean one hour of only hardcore gymming, even something as simple as playing a game of tennis or basketball or simply brisk walking can add years to your life.
But one hour minimum is required everyday. You may divide this hour into two, morning and evening, as per your convenience and availability.
2. One dairy product:
At least one dairy product, be it milk, cheese, paneer, or yogurt, must be included in your daily intake. Agrees, Sweety Das, a well known Nutritionist practicing in Denmark Research Centre, as when she says, “Milk and milk products are the chief sources of proteins and calcium. And these must form a part of everyday meals in an individual’s daily diet plan. “But”, warns Dr Das, “milk must always be skimmed, because whole milk is full of cholesterol. As for the cheese, it is advisable to buy low fat cheese and all dairy products must be prepared from skimmed milk, including paneer. But if you are lactose intolerant, you can opt for soya milk. Diets rich in dairy products provide important vitamins and minerals essential for growth and development.
3. One cup of green tea
Yes, specifically, green tea and not regular tea, as green tea provides immense health benefits, that may not be present in your regular cuppa tea. “It is important to switch to herbal or green tea as it is full of antioxidants and the polyphenols present in green tea are good for cardiovascular health. Moreover, these polyphenols also act as stimulants thereby keeping you alert and cheerful. But the recommended quantity to make the most of green tea, is a minimum of one cup each day and a maximum of three, says Dr Das.
4. One apple a day
Okay, you have already read a lot about the benefits of this fruit, but when was the last time you took a bite? If you are unable to remember, then know that by ignoring this fruit, you are actually depriving your body of the one such “natural” medicine that has the power of preventing any ailments or diseases that can potentially afflict you. Yes, this red fruit is a rich source of phytochemicals, and is linked with a reduced risk of cancers, cardiovascular disease, asthma and diabetes. In fact, the list of its benefits is so long, that by the time I finish writing it, you might as well get a bite and know it for yourself!
5. One big bottle of water
One of the most common statements you must have read: ‘Drink 10 to 12 glasses of water everyday for a healthy and glowing skin’. But simple, as it may sound, it is the most pertinent for a well balanced and healthy bodily system. Among the many other essential functions, water plays a key role in flushing out the toxins, regulating body temperature and transporting nutrients and oxygen into cells. Moreover, the fact that almost three fourths of our body contains water, tells just how important this transparent fluid is. So, recommended quantity is, at least one big bottle of water must be finished every day.
6. One hobby
This is something each one us professes, but only some of us practice. But, when you bring to the fore, something that you inherently like doing, it can be greatly beneficial to your physical as well as mental health. But very often there are so many things we do equally well, and we may refer to all of them as our hobbies. Nothing wrong with that, but there must be at least “one” such hobby that you would love to do, anytime anywhere, given an opportunity. It may be anything that you can pursue on the weekends. The funda is to keep one such activity alive, as it’s is truly therapeutic.
7. One fist of nuts
Going by the funda, too much of anything is harmful, it is recommended that one take a daily intake of “One” fistful of dry fruits. Mixed dry fruits, including almonds, cashews, pistachios, walnuts et al are a nutrient dense food and contain high amounts of dietary fiber. They are high in unsaturated fats, and low in saturated fats. They also contain folic acid, copper, magnesium, essential vitamins and antioxidants. Nuts are also known to promote heart health and are one of the best plant sources of protein. You can also have these mixed with “One” glass of milk daily.
8. One “lovely” partner
“True Love happens one time and with that “One” special someone”, so goes a famous quote. And true love also reflects good health. No, we are not preaching fidelity here, but emphasizing on the health benefits of lovemaking with “One” partner, and escaping the trap of life threatening HIV, STDs and other sexually transmitted diseases.
Sure, condoms and pills are available, but these do not come with a cent per cent guarantee and there are chances of you contracting infections, hence, the best way out, is to shower your love on the one you truly love!
9. One vacation trip
How often have you freed yourself of your daily, hectic schedule and taken some time out alone or with family? Daily duties and responsibilities, targets and deadlines, work, home and kids, all of these leave us too occupied to even think of going out on a vacation. But research confirms, that “One” vacation taken a year, has immense benefits on an individual’s overall physical and mental health and lifestyle. It is important to unwind your mind and body and let your hair down at least “once” a year. This refreshes the mind and rejuvenates the body, it keeps you mentally at peace and gives you enough strength to start afresh once back.
10. One Sunday, one hour to pamper yourself
Go, be a baby and get pampered! The “One” Sunday, when you do not have to rush to office, is the time you may want to shift roles, cross the fence and see what it looks like from the other side. How about taking the couch and letting your hands and feet get pampered, while you get yourself a herbal facial massage done? In times when looks matter as much as the IQ, personal grooming becomes all the more important.
Devote at least “One” complete hour just to yourself! Sounds, interesting? Try it!
